Writers Workshop with Jennifer Haupt and Anna Quinn June 22

These two amazing writers will hold workshops at Beach Books following their Lunch in the Loft presentations. Each author will have an hour presentation.

How to Weave a Web of Characters with Jennifer Haupt

Whether you’re writing a memoir or novel, weaving a web of characters is a valuable (and fun!) technique for sustaining the momentum of your work-in-progress. We’ll discuss and practice basic exercises to create a cast of characters that support each other, and examine ways to start building strands of tension between these characters to keep the story moving.

Come with a fresh notebook and your favorite pen because you'll be starting a process journal! This is a great toolbox for all of the various exercises you accumulate while creating a book. You’ll come back to it for inspiration when you hit road blocks and to keep on-track — from chapter one through “the end.”

Jennifer Haupt is the author of In the Shadow of 10,000 Hills (April 2018) and co-author of I'll Stand by You: One Woman's Mission to Heal the Children of the World, the memoir of children's advocate Elissa Montanti. Haupt's work has been published in O, The Oprah MagazineSpirituality & HealthPsychology Today and many other publications over the past 25 years.

The Art and Craft of Emotional Truth with Anna Quinn

Writers often find themselves confronted by the question, “What is emotional truth?” and the further questions, “How do I put it on the page? And why should I ?

Emotion is the underlying support of story—the aspect that unlocks voice, wakes up the body, the heart, touches the soul. Writing emotion deftly and intimately, moves your writing beyond the prescribed, the flat, the formulaic—into the alive, the vivid, the evocative—the story your reader won’t be able to put down. In this one hour workshop, we’ll discuss what emotional truth is and how to identify not only the primary emotions in a memoir or novel scene, or a blog post or essay, but the layers beneath. We’ll also practice moving emotion from heart to the page. Bring paper and pen and an important object from your dresser or nightstand.
